“Ja, I Am Legend, die wil ik zien! Die film lijkt me zo leuk hé. Helaas komt hij pas over één week in de bioscoop.” hoor ik een vriend van mij zeggen. “Is dat een probleem dan? Ik heb hem al, erg leuke film. Vooral de scène met” probeer ik te antwoorden, alleen wordt ik onderbroken. “Wat? Hoezo heb je hem al?” zegt mijn vriend vol verbazing. “Gewoon, gedownload, wat anders?” antwoord ik. “Mag dat wel? Draaien de film maatschappijen daar niet enorm verlies door?”

Piraterij, het is al eeuwenlang een “probleem” Wat begon met boeken, gaat nu voornamelijk over film, muziek en software. Grote film maatschappijen lopen enorm veel mis omdat mensen nu gewoon films kunnen downloaden zonder problemen of kosten. Muziek maatschappijen missen de verkoop van albums. Kleine game developers durven hun games niet meer uit te brengen in verband met piraterij. Veel moeite hoef je er niet voor te doen, iedereen kan wel een film of een album downloaden. Aan de andere kant heeft het ook voordelen. Het kan voor goeie publiciteit zorgen, naambekendheid geven en een gratis manier van het tot de massa brengen. Ik behandel zowel de voordelen als de nadelen, om te beginnen met de nadelen.

Een goed argument tegen piraterij zijn de verliezen. De filmindustrie in Amerika, de US Motion Picture Studios hebben in het jaar 2005 alleen al 6,1miljard dollar verloren door piraterij. De totale verliezen van de filmindustrie wereldwijd zijn veel hoger, namelijk 18,2 miljard dollar. ¹ Echter, deze info komt van de MPAA, Motion Picture Association of America, een anti-piraten organisatie die opkomt voor de filmindustrie. Deze organisatie heeft nog al de neiging om met getallen te sjoemelen.² De muziek industry heeft volgens de Institute for Policy Innovation 12,5 miljard dollar gekost en meer dan 71,000 banen.³ Echter, weer kloppen de nummers niet perfect. De getallen zijn geen actuele feiten, maar deels beredeneert. Ook tellen ze het rippen van cd’s voor eigen gebruik als piraterij, wat het van verre na niet is.⁴

Echter, er zijn niet alleen argumenten tegen piraterij.

Eric D. Wilkinson, producer van de kleine, onafhankelijke film, uitte laatst nog zijn dankbaarheid aan de “file-sharing community” Zijn film was niet al te bekent, omdat het niet goed werd geadverteerd of een andere vorm van reclame had. Maar door een post op rlslog.net⁵ (een weblog met de nieuwste “scenereleases”, een site waar nieuw uitgebrachte films op staan) kreeg zijn film veel publiciteit. Van een nauwelijks bezochte site naar 23,000 hits in minder dan 12 dagen, de film kreeg goeie recensies en populariteit. Zoals te lezen valt, de film kreeg veel publiciteit door de post. Zonder al die publiciteit zou de film niet naar de massa’s zijn gebracht, wat jammer zou zijn aangezien het een goeie film is volgens de critici. Meer onafhankelijke films zullen hoogst waarschijnlijk hun films op het internet zetten, zodat het gedeeld wordt en zijn publiciteit krijgt. Ook is de impact op de artiesten minimaal. Het biedt voornamelijk een mogelijkheid voor nieuwe, onbekende artiesten om naambekendheid te krijgen. Als je geen goed idee kan krijgen van de artiest is de kans dat je een album koopt of naar een concert gaan ook kleiner. Door een album te downloaden krijg je een goed idee van de artiest en kan je je muziek smaak verbreden. Je koopt namelijk niet zo snel een album van een genre waarvan je niet weet of je het leuk vind, maar als je eventjes een album kan downloaden kan je het rustig beluisteren.

Of piraterij slecht is ligt meer aan slecht voor wie. Voor de grote muziek en film maatschappijen is het erg nadelig, aangezien ze de publiciteit niet meer nodig hebben maar wel inkomsten missen. Voor onbekende en onafhankelijke artiesten en film producers kan piraterij goed uitlopen. Voornamelijk omdat het voor publiciteit, naambekendheid en verspreiding van de muziek zorgt. Zonder piraterij hebben kleine bandjes geen goeie manier om hun muziek te verspreiden, aangezien het niet goed te verkopen is aan winkels, touren te veel tijd kost en ze door piraterij wereldweid bekent kunnen worden. Voor producers geldt hetzelfde.

Do you like metal? Do you like video games? Heres a nice mix of both for ya then. I picked this album up about a month ago. At the time there was no scene rls of it though so I couldn’t post it here on rlslog so I was happy to see a KzT release of the album today. Basically what the band does is mix themes from classic video games and give it a power/heavy/speed metal touch. There are no vocals but the riffs and solos mixed with awesome nintendo-esque melodies are enough to keep me happy. Where in the name of Manbearpig did this band get their name from? Powerglove are a video game metal band from Arlington, Massachusetts. They are an unsigned band currently with two releases, the “Total Pwnage EP” and the “Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man” album. The band plays a variety of heavy metal/speed metal covers of popular video game music such as “Tetris” and “Power Rangers”. The torrent link is not the KzT rls for now. Geweldig nummer met een goed standpunt. Het is idd wel een beetje meuk dat je Wiet wel kan kopen in coffeeshops, terwijl je het niet mag telen. Door coffeeshops zelf te laten telen kan je er regels aan hangen, ook aan de sterkte. ook weet je zeker dat het goed en veilig is. Zo kan je er zelfs bealsting op zetten. Echter, TPB aanklagen, daar kom je niet ver mee. Prince gaat echter een stapje verder. De Admins van TPB worden, zo zeggen ze, gevolgd door auto´s met een deens nummerbord.

Sunde says that the investigators are taking pictures from inside the car “with a flash, so I’m not sure how smart they are.” He notes that something similar happened last year before a police raid on Pirate Bay servers.

He is “quite sure” that this is related to Prince’s own announced plan to sue the site (though a Swedish prosecutor has also announced plans to sue the administrators in the next couple of months). “What do they think they can find out by following us around?” Sunde asks. “Everything we do is digital.”

This guy really deserves support from the file shareing community! You can support producers of The Man From Earth by buying the retail DVD, which should be available in the US stores from tomorrow.

Jaja, piracy kan wel goed zijn. Dit lijkt wel een beetje op de actie van Radiohead. Die hebben hun nieuwste album gratis op hun site gezet om te downloaden. Je kon zelf bepalen hoeveel je Radiohead betaalde.
